The Project

Sotra Link is the largest road contract ever awarded by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). The project’s aim is to improve travel time and safety on the west coast of the Scandinavian peninsula. It connects the island of Sotra with the urban center Bergen, creating both a road and a bicycle path, while improving adjacent secondary roads. The project includes a 900 m-long suspension bridge, in addition to 19 underpasses, 22 bridges, 9 km of motorways, 14 km of bicycle paths, and 12.5 km of tunnel. The project has been implemented with a PPP formula (Private- Public Partnership). It holds to the highest environmental standards, showing a strong commitment to reducing its carbon footprint from construction to full use.

No community is an island

This spectacular suspension bridge brings life on the island of Sotra closer to the city of Bergen. Located in the Norwegian county of Vestland, the Sotra Link project is a sophisticated system of bridges, tunnels, cycling paths, pedestrian underpasses, and connections to secondary roads. It implements a “macro-micro” approach to ensure sustainable mobility and unite local, regional, and national interests. It’s scheduled to open in June 2027. Once operational, it will reduce travel time by 20 minutes, eliminating traffic bottlenecks and improving access to the island of Sotra.

The Norwegian Public Road Authority’s high environmental standards have led us to creative design solutions and the innovative use of materials. our goal is to reduce the new infrastructure’s carbon footprint throughout its life cycle

It’s been an important professional challenge in my carrier and proves the success of ARX’s “glocal” approach. We’ve organized a multicultural and multidisciplinary design team that combines colleagues from 9 different countries around the world, providing the best from each discipline for this project. Not only that, we’ve provided both timely design services and continuous onsite technical support.
