The Project
ARX was appointed by Tiroler Flughafenbetriebsgesellschaft m.b.H. to conduct a technical development study for the modernization of Innsbruck Airport’s terminal facilities. The study aimed to define the optimal functional and spatial configuration for a new terminal or extension of the existing building, ensuring compliance with operational, safety, and capacity requirements.
The assignment included a comprehensive assessment of the existing infrastructure, followed by the simulation and analysis of terminal processes, including check-in, security, boarding, and baggage handling. ARX developed multiple functional layout scenarios, optimizing passenger flow, processing capacity, and construction phasing to minimize operational disruption.
The study validated design assumptions established in earlier pre-pandemic studies and integrated updated traffic forecasts, operational data, and building code constraints to produce a robust terminal development roadmap ready for architectural design competition.
