The Project
The project comprised the detailed engineering design for the runway extension and associated airside systems at Zirku Airport, a private facility supporting offshore oil field operations in the Arabian Gulf.
The scope included the geometric design of the extended runway, with longitudinal and transverse grading, turn pads, and slope optimization, ensuring full compliance with international standards.
Design activities covered pavement structure, runway and taxiway markings, and a complete airfield ground lighting (AGL) system integrating approach, threshold, edge, and PAPI installations.
Additional works addressed drainage interfaces, firefighting network coordination, and obstacle limitation surface (OLS) verification to ensure safe aircraft operations within the island’s spatial and environmental constraints.
The upgraded runway was commissioned in 2016, improving operational flexibility, safety, and long-term performance of the airfield infrastructure.
